I have already discussed my reservations about the Kfir Block 60 aircraft in a previous blog,1 but the Kfir will always be a darkhorse for any plans for the Philippines to buy a main combat aircraft because of its low price, a huge consideration for a budget-conscious air force like ours. This blog will focus more on how it matches up with the main threat that it would be facing in our air force as of now, the SU-30MKK, if we do end up buying the Kfir in the near future.
The Kfir is based on the Mirage III/5 delta-winged aircraft whose blueprints were stolen by the Mossad (as is now detailed in various spy books and articles2), and is described as an all-weather, Multi-Role Fighter aircraft. It was made by the Israel Aircraft Industry (IAI) and first entered service in 1975, seeing extensive combat duty with the Israeli Air Force (IAF) before finally being retired in 1996. There are rumors are that the Philippine Air Force (PAF) may be considering the F-16A Netz from Israel for possible acquisition, hence I thought it would be a good idea to try to see how it will fare against the main threat (for now) it will be facing it if does get chosen, which is China’s SU-30MKK Flanker-G.
The SU-30 is an improved version of the SU-27 Flanker made by the Russian Federation’s “Sukhoi Company” and first entered service with the Russian Air Force in 1996. It is described as a heavy, long-range, all-weather strike fighter and around 400+ aircrafts have been built so far in service with 9 countries around the world. Aside from the F-16C, another aircraft that the Philippine Air Force (PhAF) has its sights on for the Philippines’ main combat aircraft is the JAS-39 Gripen. An informal survey by the Philippine News Agency just a couple of months ago showed that most PhAF pilots preferred to have the Gripen to be the country’s next fighter aircraft. We’ve already seen how the F-16C could fare against the SU-30MKK in my blog, “The F-16C Block 50/52+ Viper versus the SU-30MKK/MK2 Flanker-G“, let us now take a look at how the JAS-39 could fare against the same adversary.
The JAS-39 is made by the Swedish company “Saab” and first entered service with the Swedish Air Force in 1997. It is described as a lightweight Multi Role Fighter (MRF) and 250 aircrafts have been built so far in service with 6 countries around the world. The JAS-39C is the latest mass produced version of the aircraft introduced into service in 2003 with improvements like better avionics, in-flight refuelling capability and an improved oxygen system for long-duration flights. The aircraft’s official name is “Gripen” which is the Swedish word for “Griffin”, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an Eagle. I’ve noted on my blog “The FA-50 Golden Eagle versus the SU-30MKK/MK2 Flanker-G” the apparent shortcoming of the FA-50 Golden Eagle in Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat against China’s current premiere fighter aircraft, the SU-30MKK/MK2 Flanker-G. So the question is, what kind of aircraft would be needed to match up individually against the Flanker-G? The F-16C has always been on the radar of the Philippine Air Force (PhAF) to be its main combat aircraft, and plans were in fact under way to acquire second-hand models of it from the United States before being eventually abandoned due to the projected high costs of maintenance of the used aircrafts. Despite this, let’s take a curious look at how the F-16C Block 50/52+ would fare against the Flanker-G.

It is described as an all-weather Multi Role Fighter (MRF) and one of the most successful modern aircraft designs as eventually over 4,500 were built and went into service into more than 26 countries worldwide. It now looks like the Philippine Air Force’s (PhAF) acquisition of the FA-50 Golden Eagle is a GO, and all that is missing now is the formal announcement, which is likely to be done during PNoy’s State Visit to South Korea on Oct. 17-18, 2013. A critical clue to this is thru the PhAF Air Defense Wing’s Journal announcing that, “… the initial delivery of 2 new fighter aircraft in 2014 …”, and they then go on to show this training plan, citing the FA-50 SPECIFICALLY:
Of course a lot could still happen between now and the formal announcement, but as of now I think the FA-50 deal is 99% sure already barring any major catastrophe or event that will affect the announcement. Hence, let’s take a close look at how the FA-50 compares with major threats it could be facing, like China’s SU-30MKK/MK2 Flanker-G fighter aircraft, for example.
